Get certified through the NYS DEC.
A free one-day training is held at the DEC office in Northville, NY. The day consists of half a day of classwork by the Forest Rangers and the second half consists of a mock search. Set up by the Rangers, you will get a chance to try out a simulated SAR grid search. Team 5-1 crew bosses will join you for the afternoon field work.
After becoming certified, new members are required to attend a two-day training at our team HQ. This training will go further in-depth into various search and rescue techniques, wilderness survival, map and compass navigation, and much more!
After these three training days, new members are placed onto the call tree and are available to participate in searches.
Team 5-1 holds four meetings a year and members are encouraged to attend. Our annual training is held the first full weekend in May and members should plan to attend at least one of those days to improve on their SAR skills-base and connect with team members.
Team dues are $10 per year and are collected at the May training.
